Medium is the online platform for Communication Science students at the University of Amsterdam and is part of study association Mercurius. Daily, topical and communication science-related articles appear on Medium. For the summer of academic year 2020-2021 and for the academic year of 2021-2022, we’re looking for new members to join our team. Medium offers (beginning) journalistic talent a platform for further development. As part of Medium you work together in an enthusiastic team, get to know new people and gain a lot of practical experience during your studies.
We are looking for the following functions. Click on a function for the job description. All functions are available for all students (Dutch and International).
Editor in Chief
The Editor in Chief is expected to oversee the well-functioning of the online platform, establish partnerships with other publications or associations, guide writers and editors on how to develop their skills, and other duties that will be disclosed below. Alongside the Managing Editor, the Editor in Chief will oversee the budget and spending of the publication. A more exhaustive list of duties is as follows:
Communicate to staff members about the happenings within the publication.
Establish partnerships with associations and other publications.
Keep track of rubrics.
Maintain a good working and social environment by organizing monthly gatherings or activities that are accessible to all or most staff members.
Aid staff members in developing their journalistic skills.
Organize and lead general meetings that inform staff members about the publication’s statistics as well as updates within Medium.
Monitor the tone of all content published on diverse platforms.
Be in direct contact with Mercurius board members to ensure Medium reflects the identity of Mercurius and the UvA.
Supervise and work alongside the Managing Editor.
Manage the audiovisual team along with the writers editors, and social media team.
Dynamic and creative individual interested and passionate about media/journalism/communication
English and/or Dutch speaker
Proactive and does not wait to be assigned tasks
Interested in helping others reach their goals
Interested in building a creative portfolio
Preferably some knowledge in using wordpress, SEO’s, graphic design, and video production
Must be be enrolled as a UVA Communication Science Student (Bachelors/Masters)
As a writer, you will be assigned a certain amount of monthly deadlines which will be determined by the editorial Team. Particularly, you will be assigned to write about one of the following themes linked to Communication Science: Politics, Tech, Marketing & PR, or Travel in Dutch or English.
The Medium editorial team will be assisting you throughout the entirety of the writing process, from the article idea, to the publishing. You will also get access to a variety of workshops, brainstorming sessions, and get feedback sessions to ensure your continuous learning about writing and journalism.
As an editor you take care of providing feedback to the writers. It is important to have knowledge in grammar, syntax, and vocabulary to properly construct the feedback to the writers. You will be assigned a certain amount of articles to edit per month, which will be determined by the Editorial Team.
You will also get access to a variety of workshops, brainstorming sessions, and get feedback sessions to ensure your continuous learning about writing and journalism.
Our photographers take care of the visual aspect of our content. When we do an interview, one of our photographers comes along to take care of the photos that go with the article. As a photographer you are the creative eye who supplies the image for every story.
For this you will be in charge of visualizing data and information for our short documentaries, videos, articles, and social media. Sometimes you can choose the information to visualize, other times it can be assigned to you based on the need in a project. You also can participate in brainstorming sessions for projects to help the team craft their story.
As a research producer you will be in charge of conducting research for Mediums’ short documentaries, videos, articles, and/or podcasts. Sometimes you can choose the research to conduct, other times it can be assigned to you based on the need in a project. You also can participate in project brainstorms to help the team craft their story. This is for anyone interested in finding links, evidence, and support for digital stories.
As an audio producer, you will be responsible for editing podcasts and getting them ready to post. You are required to have some knowledge or interest in music or podcast production. You will primarily be using audio editing software such as, Adobe Audition.
You will also get access to a variety of workshops, brainstorming sessions, and get feedback sessions to ensure your continuous learning about audio production for digital storytelling.
As a cartoonist you will responsible for creating a certain amount of illustrations or cartoons, to be decided by the editorial team. You will be assigned a certain theme every month but you will have artistic freedom in the interpretation of the theme. If you have skills in digital illustrations, photo editing, or cartooning, this is for you.
If you want to apply, you must be a student of Communication Science (bachelor/master) or have completed this degree less than a year ago. You must also be a member of Study Association Mercurius. If you are not yet a member, you can become a member following your interview with the editorial team.
